I live here

It wasn't the absolute best day to be out walking on the coast path's cliff tops. Overcast greyness in sky and sea, fine drizzle occasionally. But it was still a pleasure to have a seat for a few minutes at one of my favourite benches.

On a clear day, out to the left of the headlands, you can see out to Lundy Island, about thirty miles distant in the Bristol Channel, or to Hartland Point, a distant headland with a lighthouse on it over the border in Devon (spit), on the horizon beyond the furthest headland seen here.

But it wasn't one of those days.

Still, as I stood just off to the left of the bench you can see here, to see the beach on the cove to the right of the little island with my binoculars, I could watch about thirty grey seals hauled up and basking, their occasional haunting calls echoing around the rocks of the cliff above them.

A passing couple of holidaying coast path walkers stopped to see what I was looking at, so I let them borrow the binoculars to see the seals for themselves too. They heard them calling as they came along the clifftop path above the little beach, but you can't see that beach clearly until you get here.

You can tell the holiday walkers as opposed to the coast path hikers. These two had Essex accents, were wearing shorts as if determined that the wearing of them would improve the weather, their best holiday hats, and carrying small daypacks, probably for sandwiches and a can of pop.

Lightweight shower-proof cagoules, sports trainer type shoes rather than hiking boots or shoes, and no sign of a proper map, so probably only doing the 'day walk' from one coastal village to the next. Fair play, that's about five miles of pretty tough going here—but they probably didn't fully appreciate how knee-breaking it would be!

They thanked me then asked if I was heading south or north, as I wasn't moving in either direction and was only carrying my satchel (for binoculars, water bottle, waterproof, dog ball and treats).

Ooh, I can use my envy-invoking reply (replies to other humans, file number 241) to that!

"Oh, no," I said, "I've just popped out to exercise the dog around the fields in my lunch break," pause for effect, "I live here."

Yep, the envious face.

Times two. Bonus!

I love doing that.
